Your Bio

I've always enjoyed taking pictures throughout my life, from a toy Bugs Bunny camera I got as a child, to the modern Nikon digital SLR models. I'm a fan of Nikon cameras and I currently shoot with the following equipment:

Nikon:

I have also shot with the legendary Holga 120S and Ilford HP5 400 Black & White film.

Before the Nikon, I shot with one of the first really good consumer digital cameras, the Kodak DC260 which I got back in 1998 for the princely sum of $1000 at CompUSA. This is before most people really knew what digital cameras were. My childhood time around photography involved various plastic Instamatic 126 (like the Bugs Bunny) and 110 toy cameras with their plastic-fantastic lenses (remember those blue FlashCubes?) Back then I'd shoot a cartridge (usually pretty quickly) and then drop it off at the Fotomat hut, and eagerly wait the 3-7 days to get the resulting pictures back. We've come a long ways from that.

My photography activities are currently focused in stock photography. Most recently, I've taken an interest in food as a subject matter for my photos, but I still enjoy using wide-angle lenses to capture cityscapes and natural landscapes. I enjoy capturing the New England autumn's colors and I look forward to capturing spring and summer with such things as plant, insect and flower macros.

I am continually adding to these galleries, so feel free to return here. If by chance you're interested in purchasing or using one of these shots, my email is therion256 [ at ] yahoo [ dot ] com.

Q: Why do you call yourself Therion and what is a "therion"? A: I took up the pseudonym "Therion" for my use in the Internet medium, based upon the name of a Celtic Frost all-time favorite album named To Mega Therion. The word "therion" itself is a Greek word (θηρίον) for "beast."

The Legendary Holga 120S and Pictures : By their nature, pictures from the Holga 120S are "flawed" by modern photography standards. This Holga 120S gallery represents a step into the realm of medium-format photography. I was still quite a beginner at photography in the summer of 2005, when I shot these. However, I do count making photos with the Holga as one of my most important photographic experiences, and I think that everyone who wants to pursue the craft (as fun hobby or serious aspiring pro) should give themselves a chance with this camera. The images are one-of-a-kind and have a character all their own.

These cameras are cheap and accessible for those who want to try out medium-format photography. The only real rub was the cost of developing the prints. It cost $60-70 to develop and print a roll of 12 exposures.

I shot some colour photos and some black & white. In my personal opinion, the black & whites are the best ones. These pictures came straight from prints on the scanner bed to the screen. Due to the "flawed" and unique character of the images, many would consider it heresy to attempt to digitally fix/alter the images in Photoshop. It misses the point of shooting with one of these cameras, which is to have fun and understand that there is an element of unpredictability with the images this camera yields.

Stock Photos :
I have been doing stock photography ever since I heard of Shutter Stock. I started really slow at first in August of 2005, with a very small stable of images and with almost no knowledge of composition or what really makes a photo "good" and stock-worthy, from a technical or compositional standpoint. Generally, not all good (from an artistic standpoint) pictures make for good stock. The initial draw of this for me was that one can make money off of images which would otherwise just sit on a hard drive. That is not the sole reason that I'm doing this. I see great incentive in trying to learn the technical and compositional aspects of quality images and photography through this avenue. When you can present a good quantity of high-quality images, you can expect greater sales.

There are a number of so-called "micro-stock" sites out there. You get paid a small amount for each photo which someone downloads from the site which was submitted by you, usually from $0.20 to $1.00. Some people have gotten hundreds or even over $1000 a month doing this. This can be a great way to pay for this expensive "habit" that photographers have. Images are available for subscribers to purchase 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so one can earn money while they are sleeping. The last time I remember being able to do something like that was when I tucked a baby tooth under the pillow for the Tooth Fairy to take and I'd find several quarters under the pillow in the morning. That being said, I've probably sold the equivalent of many jaw-fulls of teeth at this point.

The pictures you submit must meet certain technical and artistic criteria and pass the muster of a reviewer employed by the site. Another major part of submitting pictures is that it is critical to choose proper keywords to add to your photos so that they may be found by clients who are looking for a particular item, for example, halloween or pepper, in the search engine used by the site.

While I've made my current thoughts on microstock clear, there is a competing school of thought which takes issue with and opposes microstock. These are the more traditional Rights-Managed or Royalty Stock photography as practiced by Getty and Corbis members. An illuminating and insightful article on the topic is here at CNN-Money which may be of interest.

In this gallery, I put up the photos that have been accepted as stock by at least one of the sites.

V-Cube 7x7x7 :
The V-Cube 7 is a "Rubik's Cube" type of puzzle with 7 layers, as opposed to the 3-layer one we all remember from the 80's. I received the cube on 1/26/2009, and figured out a solution in two days, solving it on 1/28. In general, once you can solve the 4 and 5-layer cubes, the techniques from those puzzles can be used on larger order cubes. It typically takes me around an hour to solve it with the solution I have.

The cube is manufactured in Greece by a company called V-Cubes (http://www.v-cubes.com). The company has the distinction of mass-producing the worlds largest Rubik's Cube type puzzles. Until recently, it was thought to be impossible to manufacture a cube puzzle larger than 5 layers (the Rubik's Professor cube.)

The total number of permutations of colors on the V-Cube 7 is 1.95 x 10160. The conventional number is 19 500 551 183 731 307 835 329 126 754 019 748 794 904 992 692 043 434 567 152 132 912 323 232 706 135 469 180 065 278 712 755 853 360 682 328 551 719 137 311 299 993 600 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 (roughly 19,501 sexvigintillion or 19.5 sexvigintilliard on the long scale or 19.5 duoquinquagintillion on the short scale).

By comparison, the original Rubik's Cube has 4.33 x 1019, or 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (43 quintillion) permutations.

An earlier gallery relays my experiences with the V-Cube 6. Unlike the V-Cube 6, this puzzle seems better put together, and no pieces popped out one me while playing it.

V-Cube 6x6x6 :
The V-Cube 6 is a "Rubik's Cube" type of puzzle with 6 layers, as opposed to the 3-layer one we all remember from the 80's. I received it on 11/24/2008. Unfortunately, days after getting the puzzle, a few pieces popped out as I was getting close to solving the centers...and I didn't have the confidence of replacing the colors correctly, so I took all of it apart.

Seeing all of those 219 parts lying there was outright daunting. Before completely dismantling the thing, I took some pictures of it to see how it is put together. Being that it was Thanksgiving, I gathered all the pieces into a Ziplock freezer bag and put it away so we could go out and enjoy Thanksgiving.

When I came back, I brought up a YouTube video here and watched how the whole thing goes together. I sat at my kitchen table, organized the parts by colors, and started at putting it together. It took about 3 hours for me to get it together and working again.

The total number of permutations of colors on the V-Cube 6 is 1.57 x 10116. The "conventional number" for those who don't understand the scientific notation is: 157 152 858 401 024 063 281 013 959 519 483 771 508 510 790 313 968 742 344 694 684 829 502 629 887 168 573 442 107 637 760 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000.

Autumn 2008 : I've started the Autumn 2008 photo galleries. When looking back on Autumn 2007, the foliage colors were somewhat muted and disappointing. By and large, the colors never really got beyond yellows before the leaves browned and fell off the trees, coupled with the fact that the peak colors were over 2 weeks later than normal, due to the really dry summer last year. So I shifted my emphasis onto other fall-themes, such as pumpkins, gourds and the like...and tried to be creative with any fall foliage colors I did encounter.

There are higher hopes for the foliage for this year, since there has been a lot more rain. I should add that the foliage this year has been much better than any part of 2007. There are other different challenges for this year. One of these is time; when I get out of work on a weekday, I really had until 6:15pm or so, then the light levels really diminish into evening and nightfall. So destinations have to be carefully planned, and need to be shot rapidly. Also, I no longer work in the city, so the photo opportunities exclude cityscapes this time around (unless I really go out of my way to make these happen.)

Here is the breakdown on what I've shot:

9/18/2008: It has started...
9/18, 9/22: Walden Woods Farmstand sessions
9/29: A pond off of Lowell Road in Concord
10/02: Back to Walden Woods Farmstand.
10/08: A pond off of Great Road in Acton (Ice House Pond.)
10/09: Back to Lowell Road in Concord
10/10: A whole slew of colourful Autumn foliage taken in Burlington behind Burlington Mall, at the edge of Route 128, of all places...
10/11: Acton Ice House Pond, Warren Pond in Concord (pond from 2006, under the swing, etc.), woods, pumpkin patch in Littleton
10/12: Carlisle, Bedford
10/13: Wayside Inn Grist Mill (first shots, not too good IMHO)
10/14: Return to Wayside Inn Grist Mill...much better this time.
10/15: Concord/Lexington Battle Road, Hartwell Tavern
10/16: A few shots behind a condo complex (winding fence maze.)
10/17: Shots near Concord town center...I think I finally caught that Autumn glow I've been looking for...

Last photos were shot on 11/9.

Toyota Camry 2007 : I bought this "gently used" 2007 Toyota Camry V6 LE on April 19, 2008 and took delivery on April 21 (Patriots' Day.) It only had about 8700 on the odometer, so it's pretty new in my view.

The purchase was spurred by $3400 in repair costs which were needed on my 1999 Toyota Solara, so I used it as a trade-in for this vehicle.

I don't purport these to be great photography shots, but rather documentary in nature, capturing the car while it's still in "fresh from the dealer" condition.

Boston Flower Show 2008 : Attended the Boston Flower Show at Bayside Expo Center on 3/8/2008. A chance to get many photos of flowers, and some unexpected subjects, such as sorrowful goddesses, angels, and gargoyles. I used the 50 f/1.4 lens for the whole thing, as lighting was not that bright, and I wanted to get detail. In a number of cases, displays were roped off, and you were expected to shoot from a small distance. Due to large apertures (chosen because of low light), the depth of field is small for these, and in some cases, too small. The small depth of field does serve a great artistic purpose in a number of these photos also.

14-24 Test Roll : A test roll of the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 lens. I tried out various focal lengths, apertures and focusing distances to be sure that all was well and the lens is everything that everybody says it is. The emphasis here was not so much on compositional quality as it is on the technical aspects of the lens' abilities. A number of these are shot handheld, but most are on tripod to eliminate the possibility of camera shake taking away from image sharpness.

Charles Street Jail/Liberty Hotel : This gallery covers the Charles Street Jail, and its new incarnation as the Liberty Hotel.

I found some older (9/1/2005 and 10/2005) pictures in my collection and decided to post them, not because I think they are good photos (I knew really nothing at that time about composition and was learning about the technical aspects), but because they now represent a piece of history of Boston. I didn't realize until recently that I had photos of this building as the vacant jail in my collection, and I feel that from a historical standpoint, the photos belong here. They are the first 6 photos in the gallery...feel free to look at them quickly and forget them... :)

Now that the renovations are complete and the Liberty Hotel has opened, I intend at some point to shoot pictures of the hotel, which includes a bar and a restaurant.

As of of 2/4/2008, I've added photos of my first visit to the jail as the Liberty Hotel, and will probably return for more.

Autumn 2007 :
Autumn 2007 gallery is here, with the colors and the spirit of harvest season.

I've been looking to expand upon ideas I captured in the Autumn 2006 gallery, and add other ideas as well. Thus, you'll see some photos which look familiar if you've been at the Autumn 2006 gallery and some new locations and concepts. We can roughly separate the sets into distinct categories:

Gourds and pumpkins from the later Farmer's Markets at Kendall Square.
Packard's Farm (pumpkins on trailer, pumpkin patch) (10/07 and 10/28.)
Cemetary (10/24.)
Fall Display set up at Cambridge Marriott (10/12.)
Conservation lands in Acton and Concord (10/13-10/14.)
Visit to Arena Farms in Concord, which closed down permanently on October 31 (10/14.)
Half-Moon Hill in Acton (Stone Bench sessions)
Return to Esplanade in Boston in the morning (10/22.)
In Acton, there is a road called Autumn Lane. I simply HAD to get these. I found the road by accident, attracted to a side-street by colorful foliage.
Minuteman Historical Park in Lexington/Concord (historical house, stone walls)
Several evening returns to the Esplanade.
Several shots in the historical town center of Acton (11/25.) I was grimacing at anyone using leaf-blowers as I was shooting these.
Arch Tree on the Esplanade and the leaf blower guy taken on 11/28. These were my final original shots of the season.

This year, foliage color development was quite delayed in places, due to a rather warm start to the season and warmer-than-average temperatures. At many times, one could find golden-yellow trees directly adjacent to green-leaved trees. This was especially true in downtown Boston, which hit its peak around 11/16 (over 14 days later than 2006) and there was still good color in scattered locations. On 11/25 I was able to find some great color in Acton in isolated pockets, but it was mostly sticks at that time throughout the suburban cities and towns.

My last Autumn 2007 pictures were shot on 11/28/2007. That's not to say that I won't add other pictures to this gallery, as I have a lot of stuff that I shot which hasn't gotten online.

Christmas 2007 : Family, cheer, lots of Christmas ornaments

This year, I put a much greater emphasis on the decorations, color and symbology of the holiday. I did some of this last year, but I found many of those results to be unusable in an enlarged form or for stock and greeting cards. I wanted more of the kind of thing which could be stock-worthy in quality or usable for Christmas cards, enlargements and such. As of 12/23, I have over 100 pictures of decorations, and I haven't even gotten to the usual family snapshots...

...And then on 12/24, I get all the snapshots, and a lot of my family's Christmas Tree, which I liked a lot.

Zeitgeist/Fading Memories : In most major cities, change is always happening. The old is torn down, either out of whim or out of necessity due to structural decay. Buried deep within, one can often find icons of days past, whether those were good times or bad, they are a zeitgeist, a sign of the times. These icons touch us in different ways.

A photograph is a great way to freeze and preserve moments in time for all to see...photos can help us to remember, and these icons stand in our memory. Then they elude the trend towards gentrification, the wrecking ball or the backhoe.

Kendall Square Farmer's Market 2007 : These photos cover the 2007 Kendall Square Farmer's Market, held in front of the Genzyme building in Kendall Square on Thursdays from 11:30-2:30 from August thru October. Along with vendors of great food and crafts are musical performers of various flavors at the nearby performance shed and outdoor patio, which doubles as the ice rink in winter, which I featured in my "Cold Lake" gallery.

These shots were taken over multiple sessions of the Farmer's Market, and I feel that they pushed my photography using natural/available light forward and advanced it a great deal. The majority of these are shot with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens, which calls for exacting sharpness and great colors in nearly any scenario the photographer can offer it. Furthermore, they gave me a great theme to shoot: food photography. This also ties in well with my stock photography activities.

The last photos for the Farmer's Market 2007 were shot on 11/1/2007.

Autumn 2006 : Project: get the best colors from the best season in 2006, before the leaves all fall off.
Currently, several sets exist within this gallery:
1. Shooting along streets in Acton
2. Packard Farm pumpkin patch (2 sessions)
3. Fall displays in front of the Cambridge (Kendall Square) Marriott (2 sessions.)
4. Shots around Boston Common, Hatch Shell and the Lagoon.

This project was a great learning experience, and a far cry from the attempt at capturing Autumn 2006. The final photo for this gallery was taken on 11-25-2006. As of October 2007, I've started the Autumn 2007 gallery, carrying forward my experiences and lessons learned from 2006.

Air Boston 2007 :

Boston's AeroBalloon is back for 2007. This time it is at the Fan Pier, at 27 Northern Avenue, behind the Moakley Courthouse. It is flying from August through October, weather conditions permitting. Call (617) 307-1159 for schedule and weather conditions.

8/20/2007: I went up for this first time, around 8am, before going into work, but unfortunately, the winds started picking up after I started ascending, so they could only allow me half-way up, and had to cut the flight short. I was the only one in the balloon, so they gave me the radio as well. I couldn't get a good view over the Courthouse, so the first batch is somewhat restrictive. The guy was nice enough to only charge me half-price for this one...I'll be back. As a "consolation prize" of sorts, I walked around to the front of the Courthouse and got some great shots facing Boston Harbor, which you can see in my Boston gallery.

8/21/2007:At 8:11 I went up again. The wind was much calmer than the day before, and the air clearer. I was able to go up all the way and see above the Courthouse, and stay afloat the whole time. I was alone in the basket again, so I had the radio. The guy was nice enough to again charge me only half-price. The shots in this session are a lot better.

These images are a change of pace for me, as there is no camera involved.

I rendered these images with a freeware fractal flame editor called Apophysis which you can download from here. They were rendered with version 2.05 beta 2 on my Pentium III 2.8G Windows/Intel based machine. Of course, having multicore and the newer embellishments for your processor and memory/bus bandwidth will considerably beef up performance and reduce render times. There is a great deal of mathematics involved in fractal geometry, and it is worth the time to read the documentation and feel free to experiment with the parameters.

I only brought one lens (24mm, so some of these have that "faraway" look), the flash and the camera in to the party.

There are shots of the Seamen's Inn as well the party itself.

Panoramix : Panoramics are interesting pieces of art. They are a slight exaggeration of reality we see, as we cannot see all of the scene before us with our own eyes so (surprise!) we have to pan our eyes to see it all.

Thanks to Photoshop CS2's Photomerge, and the magic of layers and masks, we can stitch together many pictures to form a really wide scene.

My method while taking these is as follows: choose a small aperture (f/8, f/11, etc.), go to center-weighted metering, and choose a shutter speed which is an average of all the shutter speeds the meter suggests as you pan about the scene. Lock in this exposure. Pay attention to the edges of the viewfinder and make a 20% or so overlap from the end of one frame to the beginning of the next. Unfortunately, lens distortion (especially with wide-angle lenses) near the view peripheries is a pitfall which will probably involve some additional post-processing work.

A tripod with a panning head works best to assure one of level pictures throughout, though not all of mine here involved a tripod, so a greater workload awaited me in post-processing.

I'm not sure that this space is sufficient to describe the Photoshop methods in detail, partly because I'm still learning and refining my techniques. Most of the post-processing work occurs at and near the seams of the merged pictures. This involves how best to mask out the seams as well as distortions near the edges.

I haven't tried out any of the various panoramic stitching programs out there. I'm sure they vary in the quality of their output as well as their cost and ease of use. I think that Photoshop offers the most control over the results, though it certainly isn't an easy program to learn and use...and it is rather costly.

I'll probably add more to this gallery as my competency in this area grows.

Shades of Gray (Black & White) :
These black & white photos were shot with the Nikon F. I was pleasantly surprised by how most of them came out. They probably won't make Ansel Adams jump up and take notice (rest his soul), but feel free to comment on them...good or bad.

This first set was shot using Ilford HP5 ISO 400 film. Metering was mostly provided by the Weston III, but for a few, I used the D200 to meter then shoot with the F. I mainly used the Nikkor-S 50 f/1.4 (the non-AI hunk of metal and glass) and used the Micro 55 AI for some of the cat images. I had the film processed at Calumet in Cambridge (who sends it off to Kodak) for $20.

There are further plans for this area. I have a roll of Tri-X which I plan to shoot through soon and will post it here. I look forward to seeing what Tri-X will bring to the table in terms of the picture quality.

The Littlest Bar :
The Littlest Bar was a really small Irish Pub in Boston at the intersection of Bosworth and Province Streets. The place and its adjoining parking garage was slated to close at the end of July 2006, and be torn down in order to make room for high-priced condominiums.

The Littest Bar probably lives up to its name, as I've seen walk-in closets and bathrooms which were larger than this establishment. The maximum occupancy of this place is 38 people, including barstaff. The pictures will give you an idea of how small and how full of character the place was. It is a one-of-a-kind Boston landmark which will be sorely missed. I attempt to convey some of the uniqueness and smallness of this bar in the gallery pictures while under the influence of a few pints of Guinness.

Update: I regret to inform that as of 9/23/2006, the Littlest Bar closed down.

Seems to work pretty well. I didn't trust the Photomic meter, so I used a Weston Master III exposure meter to determine shutter speeds and apertures for most of these shots. Airshows 2000/2003, Quonset Point, RI : Year 2000: This airshow was particularly nice because my brother Robert and I had an exclusive tent at the front line somewhat to the right of center of the runway. We got the best views and all the food we could eat.

These pictures were also taken with the Kodak DC260 (which was a lot newer back in 2000.) Unfortunately, in my quest to fit the maximum number of pictures on the memory cards, I lowered the JPEG quality setting, so there are some JPEG artifacts visible in some of the pictures.

2003: These were taken in June 2003 with the old and really SLOW Kodak DC260. This involved anticipating where the plane/vehicles would be approximately 1 second after pressing the shutter release button. Regardless of this factor, I managed to get some great shots at this airshow (and some missed shots as well.)

Air Boston 2005 : On August 22, 2005, I had an opportunity (actually several) to take balloon rides on Boston Common. The rides were provided by AeroBalloon (www.aeroballoon.com), a Boston-based company.

The balloon ascends to an altitude of about 300 feet, and remains there for 10 minutes before being pulled back to earth via a winch.

Quite a unique photo opportunity and I took full advantage of it.

I went up twice. The only mistake I made was going up the first time with the Tamron 75-300 lens I had at the time, rather than a wider-angle option, like my kit lens, which I took up on the second flight.

Given all the movement which goes on and the cramped confines of the basket, changing lenses in mid-flight was not feasible. Therefore, a wide-angle zoom does best on a trip like this (unless you have spying in mind, which I didn't.)
