Autumn 2008 : I've started the Autumn 2008 photo galleries. When looking back on Autumn 2007, the foliage colors were somewhat muted and disappointing. By and large, the colors never really got beyond yellows before the leaves browned and fell off the trees, coupled with the fact that the peak colors were over 2 weeks later than normal, due to the really dry summer last year. So I shifted my emphasis onto other fall-themes, such as pumpkins, gourds and the like...and tried to be creative with any fall foliage colors I did encounter.

There are higher hopes for the foliage for this year, since there has been a lot more rain. I should add that the foliage this year has been much better than any part of 2007. There are other different challenges for this year. One of these is time; when I get out of work on a weekday, I really had until 6:15pm or so, then the light levels really diminish into evening and nightfall. So destinations have to be carefully planned, and need to be shot rapidly. Also, I no longer work in the city, so the photo opportunities exclude cityscapes this time around (unless I really go out of my way to make these happen.)

Here is the breakdown on what I've shot:

9/18/2008: It has started...
9/18, 9/22: Walden Woods Farmstand sessions
9/29: A pond off of Lowell Road in Concord
10/02: Back to Walden Woods Farmstand.
10/08: A pond off of Great Road in Acton (Ice House Pond.)
10/09: Back to Lowell Road in Concord
10/10: A whole slew of colourful Autumn foliage taken in Burlington behind Burlington Mall, at the edge of Route 128, of all places...
10/11: Acton Ice House Pond, Warren Pond in Concord (pond from 2006, under the swing, etc.), woods, pumpkin patch in Littleton
10/12: Carlisle, Bedford
10/13: Wayside Inn Grist Mill (first shots, not too good IMHO)
10/14: Return to Wayside Inn Grist Mill...much better this time.
10/15: Concord/Lexington Battle Road, Hartwell Tavern
10/16: A few shots behind a condo complex (winding fence maze.)
10/17: Shots near Concord town center...I think I finally caught that Autumn glow I've been looking for...

Last photos were shot on 11/9.

Autumn 2007 :
Autumn 2007 gallery is here, with the colors and the spirit of harvest season.

I've been looking to expand upon ideas I captured in the Autumn 2006 gallery, and add other ideas as well. Thus, you'll see some photos which look familiar if you've been at the Autumn 2006 gallery and some new locations and concepts. We can roughly separate the sets into distinct categories:

Gourds and pumpkins from the later Farmer's Markets at Kendall Square.
Packard's Farm (pumpkins on trailer, pumpkin patch) (10/07 and 10/28.)
Cemetary (10/24.)
Fall Display set up at Cambridge Marriott (10/12.)
Conservation lands in Acton and Concord (10/13-10/14.)
Visit to Arena Farms in Concord, which closed down permanently on October 31 (10/14.)
Half-Moon Hill in Acton (Stone Bench sessions)
Return to Esplanade in Boston in the morning (10/22.)
In Acton, there is a road called Autumn Lane. I simply HAD to get these. I found the road by accident, attracted to a side-street by colorful foliage.
Minuteman Historical Park in Lexington/Concord (historical house, stone walls)
Several evening returns to the Esplanade.
Several shots in the historical town center of Acton (11/25.) I was grimacing at anyone using leaf-blowers as I was shooting these.
Arch Tree on the Esplanade and the leaf blower guy taken on 11/28. These were my final original shots of the season.

This year, foliage color development was quite delayed in places, due to a rather warm start to the season and warmer-than-average temperatures. At many times, one could find golden-yellow trees directly adjacent to green-leaved trees. This was especially true in downtown Boston, which hit its peak around 11/16 (over 14 days later than 2006) and there was still good color in scattered locations. On 11/25 I was able to find some great color in Acton in isolated pockets, but it was mostly sticks at that time throughout the suburban cities and towns.

My last Autumn 2007 pictures were shot on 11/28/2007. That's not to say that I won't add other pictures to this gallery, as I have a lot of stuff that I shot which hasn't gotten online.

Autumn 2006 : Project: get the best colors from the best season in 2006, before the leaves all fall off.
Currently, several sets exist within this gallery:
1. Shooting along streets in Acton
2. Packard Farm pumpkin patch (2 sessions)
3. Fall displays in front of the Cambridge (Kendall Square) Marriott (2 sessions.)
4. Shots around Boston Common, Hatch Shell and the Lagoon.

This project was a great learning experience, and a far cry from the attempt at capturing Autumn 2006. The final photo for this gallery was taken on 11-25-2006. As of October 2007, I've started the Autumn 2007 gallery, carrying forward my experiences and lessons learned from 2006.
